♕ http://facebook.com/chesstutor ♕ http://twitter.com/OnlineChessLess Website: http://www.OnlineChessLessons.net Presenting Amber 2011: Round 1 (Rapid Game = 25 min + 10 sec increment) between Anish Giri (Netherlands) and Levon Aronian (Armenia). Aronian went on to crush the competition in this event and win by a large margin. Giri, on the other hand, had a poor performance in the tournament although is very new to playing with the super-elite and is sure to improve his results in future events. Aronian chose to answer Giri's opening d4 with the Dutch, quickly sacrificed a piece for the initiative, and concluded an excellent attack. Aronion was not scared to sacrifice intuitively and won a deserved game in stylish fashion. Congratulations to Levon Aronian for taking down the win at Amber 2011!

Jun 19, 2011 - @11:30 I'm thinking Why not 1. Rxg7 by white? Kxg7 leads to Qd4+ followed by Qxe3! If after 1. Rxg7 black plays Qh2 white has Kxf2. Also after 1. Rxg7 black could play Rf8 followed by Qh2. But then after 1. Rxg7 Rf8 Rh7+ Kh7 Be4+ Kh8(Rxe4 does not win for black) Qd4+ Kg8 Qxe3 Qh2 Qb3+ Kg7 Qc3+ Rf6 e3 Qg1+ Qa1 Bg2 f1=Q+ Bxf1 Qxf1+ still wins for black! BUT 1. Rxg7 Rf8 Rg8+ Rg8 Qd4+ followed by Qxe3 followed by Qxf2 or Bf3 and kxf2 saves white the game? Somebody refute this please!

Jan 7, 2012 - After 28. Rxg7 it seems 28...Qh2 draws with Rh7+ with perpetual. After 28...Rf8 29 Rxb7 and white wins. Clearly Giri planned to win with 28 Kxf2 as he is still better. Perhaps 28 Rf7 and take on f2 with the rook would be safer. I think 31 Rd3 was the decisive mistake; after 31 Rf7 (preventing the fatal check on the f-file, looks like an obvious defense) everything seems to hold.

Jun 7, 2011 - Too bad this version of Aronian didn't show up against Grischuk in their 1st rapid game where Aronian decided on a lame duck version of an English.
